Philadelphia Eagles Triumph over Dallas Cowboys
Philadelphia – Jalen Hurts rushed for two touchdowns, leading the Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, to victory.
In a desperate attempt for a comeback, Dak Prescott threw incomplete passes in both the fourth and third quarters, much to the delight of the Eagles fans, whose excitement was palpable as the clock ticked down with just 1:54 remaining.
The game wrapped up at 12:18 AM after a significant delay caused by lightning. The Eagles held a 24-20 lead with 4:44 left in the third quarter when play was suspended, ultimately marking the end of a suspenseful evening.
The Eagles’ defense missed a key player, Mika Parsons, during a touchdown run that spanned 4 to 8 yards, but they still managed without a controversial push. Saquon Barkley found the end zone with a 10-yard run, a stark contrast to last season when he amassed over 2,000 rushing yards.
After scoring, he tossed the ball into the stands and acknowledged the crowd with a nod reminiscent of his friend and mentor, Michael Jordan, receiving a warm reception when shown on the big screen.
“I think we struggled with discipline early on,” Hurts observed. “But it’s impressive how we fought back and adjusted. The team really stepped in and took on their roles. We needed to focus on discipline and concentration throughout the game.”
Before the kickoff, Hurts, Barkley, and the rest of the Eagles gathered in the locker room to celebrate the raising of the 2024 Championship banner, a moment inspired by Coach Nick Sirianni.
“This is a different team, and we’re on a new journey. We were tested tonight,” Hurts said. “We’re aware of how Dak performs when he’s back with his team. We played solid football, and it’s nice to come out with a win.”
Jalen Carter quickly returned to action after the banner ceremony, having a brief exchange with Prescott following the kickoff, where he pulled Prescott’s jersey before heading off the field. Prescott pointed out the infraction to a nearby official, leading to Carter’s ejection amidst boos from the fans as he left the field, holding his helmet behind his back.
Carter could face a significant fine due to heightened scrutiny on player conduct in the NFL.
This matchup, one of the most fiercely contested rivalries in the league, was filled with altercations and near-penalties against the Eagles in the second half as the Cowboys fought to take control.
Despite Dallas’ attempts, which included a push from Miles Sanders and a scramble for the ball near the end zone, the Super Bowl champions regained possession. Prescott made a crucial diving tackle to prevent a touchdown alongside cornerback Quy Nhon Mitchell.
The lengthy delay contributed to a slower recovery for the Eagles to regain control.
Hurts and Barkley’s touchdowns made history as the first defending Super Bowl champions to score on their first three drives since Green Bay in 2011. Javonte Williams also got in on the action with a one-yard touchdown run. Following a drive that came after Carter’s ejection, Brandon Aubrey kicked field goals from 41 and 53 yards.
