Almost 10 Men Charged in Suspected Global Car Theft and Smuggling Operation

Eight Men Charged in Car Theft and Smuggling Case

Prosecutors have accused eight individuals from Michigan of orchestrating complex car theft schemes and international smuggling operations, according to a recent statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The charges, which were made public, assert that these men conspired between July 2023 and August 2025 to acquire stolen vehicles from specific commercial or industrial locations. Authorities indicated that if these vehicles reached port cities without intervention from law enforcement, they would be shipped overseas.

“Stolen cars should not be part of interstate commerce or foreign trade,” stated Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr., who commented on the situation.

All eight defendants are facing a one-count conspiracy charge related to the transportation of stolen vehicles, along with at least one count each for transporting a stolen vehicle, as detailed in the statement.

If they are convicted of conspiracy, each could face a fine of up to $250,000 and a prison sentence of up to five years. If found guilty of transporting a stolen vehicle, the punishment could rise to ten years in prison and an additional $250,000 fine.

The investigation is being led by the Dearborn Police Department, with assistance from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, as well as support from Customs and the FBI.

According to a representative from ICE HSI Detroit, over 350 stolen vehicles have been recovered in connection with these operations. “This case hits close to home for Michigan, where car thefts affect our finances and cultural identity,” he remarked.

The indictment highlights the need for collaboration among law enforcement agencies to ensure that those who exploit our borders for illegal vehicle smuggling can be held accountable.
