Paul Gottfried Critiques Modern Conservative Values
Paul Gottfried, an American philosopher and historian, expresses his disappointment with contemporary conservatism’s departure from traditional values. He discusses how mainstream platforms, such as Fox News, have adapted in ways he finds troubling.
“After watching Fox News, I noticed their acceptance of gay marriage has markedly changed. Last year, seeing Caitlyn Jenner represented as some sort of conservative on their channel really struck me,” he shared during a segment with Jill Savage and Matthew Peterson on “Blaze News: The Mandate.”
Gottfried believes the media seems hesitant to challenge certain powerful communities, worried it might jeopardize the careers of prominent conservative figures. Yet, he observes that this caution doesn’t extend to populist movements.
He acknowledges that while some conservative commentators critique the significant socio-cultural shifts of the past few decades, they aren’t particularly subtle about it. “They are outspoken in their attacks,” he notes.
This situation is, in his view, what he terms a “voluntary counterrevolution.” He struggles to grasp the extent of these changes, suggesting that they arise from a grassroots level rather than a top-down conservative takeover.
Interestingly, Gottfried thinks that the younger generations leaning more left than their predecessors are, in a way, justified. “I believe this awakening poses a greater threat than communism,” he argues, pointing out that the risks it entails drive its momentum.
Yet, he differentiates this awakening from a utopian vision, instead labeling it as rooted in sheer animosity. “It manifests as hatred, particularly towards those who embody ‘normal’ traits,” he elaborates.
His remarks also touch on the irony of certain feminist claims. “I find it amusing to hear that women living comfortably proclaim to be victims of patriarchy. How does that add up?”
