Kentucky Student Arrested for Concealing Infant’s Death
A Kentucky student-athlete, Laiken Snelling, has been accused of hiding a deceased newborn in her closet. This information comes from former classmates who labeled her as a “serial bully.”
On Sunday, police in Lexington received a call regarding an unresponsive infant. Upon arrival, they confirmed the infant was already deceased. Officials noted that Snelling is the baby’s mother.
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office stated that the autopsy results were inconclusive, indicating that more extensive microscopic examinations are necessary to determine the cause of death.
Snelling, 21, faces charges including tampering with physical evidence, concealing the birth of an infant, and abuse of a corpse. She has pleaded not guilty.
Police reports detailed that the newborn was found in a closet, wrapped in a towel and placed in a black garbage bag.
Classmate Sydney Kite shared that during high school, Snelling bullied friends and family members. Kite mentioned, “She had a personal rage against many, including my sister. The bullying was so severe that my friend had to leave school and transfer to another one.”
Snelling is currently a senior at the University of Kentucky and is part of the school’s stunt team, which focuses on technical and athletic aspects of cheerleading.
She has been released from custody on a $100,000 bond but is under house arrest.
This incident has drawn comparisons to other similar cases over the years. For example, in 1996, Amy Grossberg and Brian Peterson claimed their newborn was stillborn after giving birth in a hotel room. In another case from 1997, Melissa Drexler gave birth at a prom and subsequently concealed the infant’s body in a trash can. Drexler ultimately received a 15-year prison sentence.
Authorities have yet to receive a comment from Snelling’s attorney.
