Chiefs Struggle Early in Season Opener Against Chargers
The Kansas City Chiefs had a slow start to the season. In their opening game against the Chargers in Brazil on Friday, they managed only six points—both coming from field goals—by half-time, trailing behind the Chargers who had seven points.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 12 passes out of 21 attempts, with 98 passing yards during those first two quarters.
On the other side, Justin Herbert of the Chargers threw for 171 yards, completing 18 of 12 passes. He also connected with receiver Quentin Johnston for a touchdown.
In the receiving department, Chargers tight end Tyler Conklin led with 50 yards from just two receptions.
Travis Kelce, a notable player for the Chiefs, also had a quiet first half. He was involved in a tough collision midway through the first quarter with Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy, which unfortunately forced Worthy to leave the game due to a shoulder injury.
During one of the earlier plays, Mahomes attempted a pass to the left but ended up facing two defenders as the ball flew through the air, which led to a chaotic moment on the field.
Initially deemed questionable to return after a hit, Worthy was later ruled out early in the second quarter with his shoulder issue.
Before the game, Kelce shared his excitement about playing in front of South American fans. He expressed, “I’m excited about tomorrow,” highlighting the importance of the fans who came out to support American sports.
Kelce also reflected on thoughts about potential retirement, admitting he feels youthful and energetic. “It’s the last of the deal right now,” he said when discussing if this might be his final season. “But what I say to you, I feel young, I feel ready to rock, baby.”
The Chiefs finally found the end zone in the third quarter, with Mahomes capping off an 11-play, 80-yard drive by scoring on an 11-yard run.
