End of LAPD Protections for Kamala Harris
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has reportedly ceased its protective measures for former Vice President Kamala Harris. This change, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, follows an earlier decision made by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D-Calif.) to temporarily provide protection.
“It’s absurd to provide daily protection for ordinary Angelenos while also extending it to presidential candidates who are often wealthy enough to afford their own safety,” noted the board of directors of the Los Angeles Police Protection League in a statement.
In the wake of President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw Harris’ Secret Service protection, Mayor Bass directed the LAPD to collaborate with the California Highway Patrol for security support.
After Trump’s action, senior officials from the White House looked into the matter and indicated that the security details for a vice president typically last only six months after leaving office. This timeframe would have expired on July 21, coinciding with the loss of personal details for Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, due to standard protocol.
Trump’s office issued a memorandum stating, “You are permitted to halt security-related procedures previously approved for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025, beyond what is required by law: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
Fox 11 reported that LAPD officers were seen near Harris’ residence earlier this week. However, the department’s funding for such protections is typically temporary, suggesting that Harris may consider hiring private security.
