West Point calls off Tom Hanks awards event planned for September

Cancellation of Tom Hanks’ Award Ceremony

The West Point Alumni Association has canceled the upcoming awards ceremony meant to honor actor and veteran advocate Tom Hanks. This decision was reported in recent communications from the association.

Hanks, celebrated for his roles in iconic military films like “Saving Private Ryan” and “Forrest Gump,” has been an outspoken supporter of former President Joe Biden and critical of Donald Trump in the past. His portrayal of the character Doug on “Saturday Night Live,” a character that parodied Trump supporters, sparked backlash from some fans of the former president.

In 2016, Hanks received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. Colonel Mark Bieger, the president and CEO of the West Point Alumni Association, informed members of the cancellation via email. Hanks was set to receive the Silvanus Sayer Award, which recognizes “duty, honor, country” among non-West Point alumni. The ceremony was scheduled for September 25th.

The association’s statement suggested this cancellation would help the Academy concentrate on its primary mission to prepare future military leaders. Bieger did not clarify if the cancellation affected Hanks’ award or just the ceremony itself, creating some uncertainty around the matter.

The Alumni Association had announced the award for Hanks back in June. Fox News Digital has reached out to both the Alumni Association and Hanks’ representatives but hasn’t received any comments yet.

Hanks recently commented on his honor, calling it “simply surprising” and highlighting the leadership and legacy of West Point as powerful examples for all Americans.

This marks a significant moment, as Hanks is known for his substantial contributions to the portrayal of American service members and support for veterans. His participation in commemorative events reflects a longstanding commitment to honor those who have served.

In other news, the association also serves as a representative for the late Senator Bob Dole regarding the World War II Memorial in Washington, recognizing the contributions made during that era.
