Two tickets win a share of the record $1.8 billion Powerball prize

(Nexstar) – Two tickets might just have matched the Powerball numbers drawn this past Saturday, capping a dramatic rise in the jackpot value.

The jackpot was estimated at a whopping $1.8 billion for Saturday’s drawing. However, by Sunday morning, it was reported that the total amount reached $1.787 billion, with a cash value of $820 million, thanks to over 40 draws without a winner. This makes it the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history, right after the Mega Millions.

The winning tickets were sold in Missouri and Texas, with both holders sharing the prize money. The ticket in Texas was purchased in Fredericksburg, roughly 70 miles from San Antonio, according to state lottery officials.

This marks the 12th time a Powerball Jackpot-winning ticket has been sold in Missouri and the third in Texas.

Like the odds of winning Powerball, which stand at about one in 292.2 million, it’s not unusual for tickets to be split. Since 2003, this is the 19th instance of a Powerball jackpot being shared.

Regarding privacy, if a winner is from Missouri, their identity will only be disclosed with written consent to the state lottery. Similarly, in Texas, winners exceeding $1 million can also choose to remain anonymous.

If you didn’t land one of those winning tickets, don’t fret too much. Powerball offers eight different ways to win, and not all of them involve hitting the jackpot.

If you’re dreaming of another record-breaking jackpot, patience might be necessary. The Powerball has been reset to $20 million, with an estimated cash option of $9.2 million. The next drawing is slated for 10:59 PM on Monday.

Meanwhile, Mega Millions is projected at $358 million, with a cash value of about $164.5 million. That drawing is set for 11 PM on Tuesday.
