Ryan Reynolds Reflects on Denzel Washington’s Reaction on Set

At the Toronto Film Festival, Ryan Reynolds shared a moment from the filming of the 2012 action movie “Safe House” that left Denzel Washington quite frustrated. Reynolds was there promoting his documentary “John Candy: I Me,” and he recounted an incident that sparked Washington’s anger.

As they were shooting the climactic scene, Reynolds’s phone rang during a particularly emotional moment. Washington’s character was on the brink of death, and Reynolds remembered the tension in the air. “Who’s the phone call for f—?” Washington yelled out, which added an unexpected layer of drama to the situation, Reynolds said.

The scene was intense; Washington’s character was supposed to be vulnerable, expressing regret, while tears streamed down his face. And then—out of nowhere—Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” started playing, a ringtone Reynolds had at the time.

When Washington asked who owned the phone, Reynolds opted to play dumb. He stood up and looked around at the stuntmen and claimed, “‘Who’s the f— call for? I won’t be allowed!'” It seemed like a light-hearted moment, but the pressure of the scene made it all the more complicated. Reynolds recounted how the assistant director stepped in, reminding Washington that they couldn’t take a break due to the ongoing stunts.

Interestingly, Washington’s representative did not comment on this story when approached. Yet, it’s worth noting that Washington doesn’t usually come off as irritable. Last year, for instance, he was seen engaging warmly with fans outside a museum in New York City, taking photos and signing autographs.

In a clip shared with Fox News Digital, Washington gently asked fans to lower their phones, indicating a desire for respect during interactions. “I said, ‘I’ll see you when I go out.’ Don’t you understand that part?” he responded to a fan who seemed insistent.
