Yankees Edge Closer to First Place
The Yankees find themselves closer to leading the AL East than they have been in months, following a hard-fought win against the Toronto Blue Jays in the Bronx on Sunday, with a final score of 4-3.
Key to their victory was Ben Rice, who launched a three-run homer in the first inning. Devin Williams, who has had a shaky start this season, pitched eight solid innings to thwart any major threats from Toronto’s lineup, before David Bednar secured the win for the second game in a row.
Bednar did allow a hit to Nathan Lukes, but managed to get him out on an attempted steal to second.
Williams faced some challenges, including a pinch-hit single from Addison Burger, who stole second. He quickly bounced back, matching up against Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and following that with a groundout from Alejandro Kirk. After a walk to Ernie Clement, Thai France pushed to third base.
This win positioned the Yankees 17 games over .500, marking their success with 11 victories in 14 games since a difficult stretch against Boston last month. Their last significant push towards first place happened on July 3, after losing the top spot to Toronto.
Initially, the Yankees struggled a bit; Rice’s home run came off Max Scherzer after a lengthy at-bat, and though they added another run in the third, they went quiet for the rest of the game.
Aaron Judge, who walked to start a rally, and Cody Bellinger’s single helped set up Rice’s big hit. Despite dealing with some discomfort in his right elbow, which impacted his throws, Judge made some decent plays in right field.
Max Fried, on the mound for the Blue Jays, allowed walk after walk and saw Clement hit a double. A throw from Judge wasn’t as strong as usual, leading to tricky situations.
Lukes caught a fly ball, but by then, Clement had already scored, narrowing the Yankees’ lead to 3-2.
In a crucial moment, Volpe’s defensive play on a grounder helped maintain the lead, even as George Springer advanced after hitting a double.
The game took a turn for the worse when Volpe committed an error, his 19th of the season, allowing Guerrero to tie the game with a hit that brought in two runs.
However, Fried did manage to hold his ground, thanks in part to a diving catch by Volpe that prevented even more damage. Once the Yankees regained possession, they rallied again, with Judge walking and stealing base, followed by Bellinger sending one to right-center.
Ultimately, Rice sealed the win with a strong hit, but not without requiring Judge to make a spectacular catch to end the game, showcasing both skill and a bit of luck.
