Carlos Alcaraz Secures Sixth Grand Slam Title at US Open
Carlos Alcaraz clinched his sixth Grand Slam title and second US Open championship on Sunday, triumphing over defending champion Jannik Sinner with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at Flushing Meadows.
This win marks Alcaraz’s first US Open title since 2022.
Fans witnessed a thrilling final between the world’s number one ranked player and second seed Alcaraz. Sinner fought hard, creating a tense moment by pushing Alcaraz to the edge during Championship Points in the fourth set.
Following a gripping battle, Alcaraz managed to dismiss Sinner’s challenge and secured the title with his next serve.
The crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium went wild, celebrating Alcaraz’s victory.
Prior to this match, Alcaraz had not lost a set throughout the tournament, although Sinner leveled the match momentarily in the second set.
President Donald Trump attended the event, generating a mixed reaction from the audience—some cheers and quite a few boos—when he acknowledged the crowd after the first set.
This was the first time a sitting president had attended the tournament since Bill Clinton in 2000, which resulted in a slight delay as many fans were still entering the venue.
Perhaps some were waiting to see Sinner, the defending champ, in action.
Alcaraz, ranked number two, faced drizzly conditions earlier in the day but aimed to avenge his recent loss to Sinner at Wimbledon. He did just that, taking the lead in their match-up history.
Moreover, this victory allowed the 22-year-old Spaniard to ascend to the number one ranking, overtaking 24-year-old Sinner from Italy.
Currently, both players are establishing themselves as the top contenders in men’s tennis.
They have dominated the Grand Slam scene, winning the last eight titles collectively, with ten out of the last thirteen.
This final is a notable milestone, marking the first time in tennis history that the same two players faced off in three consecutive Grand Slam finals in a single season.
