This week marks the distribution of the first Social Security payments for September, but some recipients might notice a decrease in their checks due to previous overpayments by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
In April, the SSA revealed that it would be withholding 50% of the monthly benefits to recover from these past overpayments.
The agency started issuing notifications about these overpayments on April 25, 2025, and began the withholdings after about three months, which means starting around July 24.
Here’s what to keep in mind regarding Social Security payments this week:
Who will receive Social Security payments this week?
According to the SSA’s payment calendar, beneficiaries born on September 10th will receive their monthly benefits on that same day.
When will Social Security payments be sent?
Typically, Social Security benefits are directed towards older individuals or retirees and are generally paid on Wednesdays.
If someone’s birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, their payment will be received on the second Wednesday. For those born between the 11th and 20th, payments are issued on the third Wednesday, while recipients with birthdays after the 20th will be compensated on the fourth Wednesday, according to SSA guidelines.
