Rex Ryan Advocates for Giants to Start Rookie QB
Rex Ryan is suggesting the Giants should consider a change at quarterback. On ESPN’s “Get Up,” the former Jets coach expressed his belief that Russell Wilson is no longer effective, stating the team should give first-round rookie Jackson Dart a chance to prove himself. This comes after the Giants’ disappointing 21-6 loss to the Commanders, while they face tough opponents like the Cowboys, Chiefs, and Chargers in the coming games.
“You have to put Dart in there. Russell Wilson can’t play anymore, and you don’t seem to know what to do with him,” Ryan remarked. “There’s never an easy time to make a switch. Everyone has their strengths. What are you afraid of? Will it get worse? I don’t think so. Let Dart take the reins and see what happens. If he turns into a player we all believe he can, then that could change everything. He has shown impressive talent—he looked significantly better than Wilson during the preseason. Why not give him a shot? What’s the alternative? Continuing with someone who’s struggling? Just stop.”
Former Jets offensive lineman Damien Woody echoed Ryan’s sentiments, pointing out that wide receiver Malik Narvers’ frustration on the sidelines highlights the need for the Giants to make a quarterback change.
“I’ve seen enough. One week was enough,” Woody said. “When your star wide receiver Malik Narvers loses his cool in Week 1, it’s a red flag. Losing a talent like him can be detrimental to your offense.”
As for Giants head coach Brian Daboll, he didn’t commit to starting Wilson in the following week, but did mention that the 36-year-old “has confidence.” He emphasized that the performance issues shouldn’t be placed solely on Wilson.
Wilson had a mixed debut with 37 passing attempts, 17 completions, and added 168 rushing yards.
