After the Rangers’ playoff exit in 2024, Blake Wheeler found himself uncertain about continuing his hockey career. In the end, he didn’t step away for long. The 39-year-old made a return to the organization on Monday, taking on the role of Hockey Operations Advisor as announced by general manager Chris Drury.
Along with Wheeler’s return, Ryane Clowe rejoined the Rangers as the assistant general manager. Ryan Martin has been elevated from assistant GM to associate GM, while Jim Sullivan moves up to assistant GM. Martin will also keep his position as General Manager for AHL Hartford.
Wheeler, who spent a significant part of his 16-year career with the Jets, was a captain there for six seasons, playing just one year in New York.
He faced a serious injury that could have sidelined him for the season, yet he came back to participate in Game 4 of the meeting finals, skating at 9:18 during a close 3-2 overtime defeat against Florida. Former captain Jacob Truba commented, “Not everyone is going to get back to that situation after a three-month trip,” highlighting the dedication Wheeler showed during his recovery.
“It really speaks to his personality,” Truba added. “We witnessed how hard he worked to return and contribute to our team over the last few months.”
Regarding Clowe, his past work with the Rangers includes two years as a hockey operations advisor and a stint as co-advisor after being general manager for San Jose. He recently announced his resignation from the Sharks, describing it as a “very difficult decision” due to his long-standing connection with the franchise.
Clowe expressed fondness for his return to San Jose, stating, “It’s Mike Greer and his entire team that made me feel welcome. At this point, this decision is in the best interest of my family.” He appreciated the opportunity provided by team president Jonathan Becher.
As for Sullivan, he previously held the position of VP of Hockey Strategy and Data Management and has no ties to coach Mike Sullivan. His journey with the Rangers began as a video analyst in 2009, leading to 17 seasons of service.
Martin, who joined the Rangers alongside Drury in 2021, previously spent 16 years with the Red Wings. Up until now, he was the sole assistant general manager under Drury, so the addition of two assistants and an associate GM signals a notable change in the Rangers’ front office dynamics.
