Stephen Tyler Honors Ozzy Osbourne at MTV VMAs

Stephen Tyler showcased his talents during the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. At 77, the iconic rock star joined Joe Perry, Yungblud, and Nuno Bettencourt to pay tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne with a heartfelt performance of “Mom, I’m Back Home.” This marked Tyler’s first performance at an awards ceremony since Aerosmith announced their retirement from touring, following Tyler’s vocal injury.

“Is this what a rock show should feel like?” one fan expressed, capturing the essence of the moment.

Despite the impressive comeback, it’s been stated by a former Guns N’ Roses drummer that Tyler won’t resume touring, even after a charity concert performance.

Fans on social media shared their emotional reactions, with one noting, “Tears in my eyes again for Ozzy. Incredible performance from Yungblud, Stephen Tyler, Joe Perry, Nuno, and Bmas. OzzyForever.” This tribute comes following the recent passing of Osbourne in July.

Tyler’s team hasn’t yet responded to requests for comments. In August 2024, Aerosmith revealed their decision to retire after more than 50 years, prompted by Tyler’s vocal cord injury.

Reflecting on their long journey, Aerosmith remarked, “In 1970, sparks of inspiration took flight. Thanks to our loyal fans, those sparks turned into flames.” Their gratitude was palpable as they acknowledged the support from fans at every performance.

They also faced the reality of Tyler’s health: “Stephen’s voice is a unique gift, but his recovery has proven challenging, prompting us to make some tough decisions.” It was clear that a full recovery was beyond reach, leading to the emotional choice to step back.

Tyler and his team expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone who walked alongside them, emphasizing the shared experience with fans during their illustrious career.

Earlier this year, Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Solm commented on Tyler’s future, stating he wouldn’t return to the tour despite participating in recent performances. He explained, “Stephen can’t handle the pressures of a full global tour at 77. It’s a lot to ask, especially given his history.” Solm noted that while Tyler may be open to pre-recording parts as other artists do, he remains adamant about wanting to maintain his authenticity in voice and performance.
