Kenneth Weinstein is named ombudsman for journalistic integrity.

CBS News has announced the hiring of Kenneth R. Weinstein as the new ombudsman to champion “journalism’s integrity and transparency” amid recent controversies. This decision was made public on Monday.

Weinstein, who previously held the position of president and CEO at the Hudson Institute, was appointed by Paramount, the parent company. He will serve as the ombudsman for CBS News as part of a commitment made in connection with the merger between Paramount and SkyDance Media, which now oversees CBS News under CEO David Ellison. Ellison has emphasized creating nonpartisan news and enhancing accountability.

In his role, Weinstein will act as an independent internal advocate, addressing concerns brought forth by employees and the audience, examining news coverage questions, and supporting a longstanding commitment to accuracy within the organization.

In a statement, Weinstein expressed his honor in taking up this position at CBS News, describing it as “one of the most respected journalistic institutions.” He’s looking forward to managing public trust and supporting the skilled team behind CBS News.

Paramount disclosed that Weinstein will review complaints from consumers, staff, and other stakeholders to decide if further actions are warranted. If he determines that a complaint has merit, he will present it to Paramount President Jeff Shell and television media chairman George Cheek.

Weinstein will collaborate with Shell, Cheek, and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski to assess each issue and recommend any necessary measures.

Shell welcomed Weinstein, noting the increased necessity for trust in media today and expressing his commitment to truth and accountability. He praised Weinstein’s integrity and extensive media experience.

Weinstein brings a wealth of experience to this role, having served on various federal advisory committees over four U.S. administrations and teaching political theory at esteemed universities.

This past year has been challenging for CBS News, especially with senior newsroom leadership changes occurring amid the Paramount SkyDance merger and in light of the network’s resolution of a lawsuit concerning former President Donald Trump’s alleged election interference with a “60 Minutes” segment.

Recently, CBS News stated that “Face the Nation” will exclusively air interviews live, in hopes of addressing concerns about editing, particularly after recent criticisms regarding an interview with Secretary of Homeland Security.

Though no formal announcements have been made, there’s speculation regarding Free Press founder Bari Weiss possibly influencing the network’s editorial directions.
