Some individuals receiving Social Security may notice reduced benefits as the agency works to address overpayments.
WASHINGTON – This week in September, various Social Security recipients are set to receive their payments, but some might find their checks to be smaller than usual.
These reduced checks result from the Social Security Administration’s decision to withhold 50% of monthly payments to recover previously paid overpayments. The agency initiated this withholding process in July after informing recipients back in late April.
Benefits will continue to be withheld until the owed amount is fully repaid.
Earlier, the Biden administration had restricted the repayment rate to 10% a year, following concerns that the earlier 100% clawback rate was causing significant financial strain for some beneficiaries.
Social Security payments are typically disbursed on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, based on the recipient’s birth date. A calendar is released yearly that outlines the expected payment dates.
Social Security Retirement September 2025:
This section details the anticipated dates for Social Security payments in September.
- September 3rd: For those who started receiving Social Security by May 1997 or who get supplemental security income.
- September 10th: Individuals with a birth date between the 1st and 10th.
- September 17th: People born between the 11th and 20th.
- September 24th: Recipients with birthdays from the 21st to the 31st.
Why Supplemental Security Income Payments Are Missing in September
Supplemental Security Income is a federal program designed for those over 65, blind, or disabled, who have limited income. Typically, these payments are issued at the start of the month, though weekends and holidays can impact the schedule.
If the first day of the month falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, SSI payments are made on the last business day prior.
This September, those receiving SSI won’t see a payment as they were issued ahead of Labor Day. Since Labor Day falls on September 1st this year, the payments were advanced to August 29th.
