AOC criticizes fellow Democrat Tom Suozzi in an unexpected fundraising appeal

Tensions Rise Among New York Democrats Over AOC

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is facing significant backlash from some of her fellow New York Democrats, as they’ve labeled her “radical.” Interestingly, support from socialist groups seems to be growing amidst this criticism.

AOC has recently called out Congressman Tom Suozzi for remarks he made that were seen as confrontational, highlighting a widening gap within New York’s Democratic delegation. Alongside her, other democratic socialists, including Zoran Mamdani, a mayoral candidate in New York City, are sensing a shift away from mainstream Democratic policies.

In fact, Ocasio-Cortez even incorporated some of this pushback into a fundraising letter she sent out.

Her campaign recently highlighted a headline in a September 2 post that read, “Mamdani, AOC, and other DSA members should leave the party: Congressman Tom Suozzi argues.”

According to sources, one of AOC’s colleagues expressed surprise at the hostility directed toward her from the moment she joined Congress.

Ocasio-Cortez, representing parts of West Queens and the Bronx, has become a prominent figure in the House among left-leaning politicians, often referred to as the “squad.”

Suozzi, a moderate Democrat who serves parts of Nassau County and Queens, leads the bipartisan House “problem solver” caucus. In a September 2 interview with CBS New York, he voiced his criticisms of socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America’s approach, suggesting that their policies are failing.

The AOC campaign countered Suozzi’s claims, arguing that they are advocating for “common sense” initiatives, like making healthcare accessible without the risk of financial ruin, aiding homeownership, and combating corporate greed.

In response to the insults, AOC’s campaign remarked, “If being ‘radical’ means supporting these issues, then we wear that label proudly,” while soliciting donations from supporters.

Last week, Ocasio-Cortez also criticized Democratic leaders like Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries for not backing Mamdani, despite his victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary.

“We have our Democratic candidates. Are we supportively gathering behind them?” asked Ocasio-Cortez, who has played a key role in backing Mamdani.

Suozzi’s team declined to address Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks in her fundraising letter, and Jeffries did not provide immediate commentary.
