Mayor Faces Backlash Over Compassion Statement in Stabbing Case
Charlotte Mayor ViLiles is under fire for her comments regarding a man accused of killing a Ukrainian refugee on a train. This incident has sparked outrage across social media platforms.
Irina Zartoska, a 23-year-old who fled war in Ukraine, was tragically murdered on August 22nd. The violent attack happened while she was on the Lynx Blue Line in Charlotte, where DeCarlos Brown, 35, allegedly stabbed her without apparent provocation.
In the wake of the tragedy, Lyles has called for empathy towards Brown, suggesting his struggles with “homelessness and mental health” should be considered. She characterized the situation as highlighting issues within the social safety net regarding mental health care.
“This is a tragic situation that sheds light on the issues of the social safety net and systems being put into place in relation to mental health care,” Lyles mentioned in her response to local reporters.
She maintains that Brown was likely “in crisis” during the attack, emphasizing that these challenges of mental health and homelessness cannot be ignored.
“Those who deal with homelessness should be treated with the same compassion as individuals suffering from diseases like cancer or heart disease,” she continued.
Lyles also expressed her determination to support people grappling with mental health struggles.
On the contrary, former President Donald Trump labeled the suspect as a “mentally confused madman” with a long criminal history, having been arrested multiple times, including for previous incidents earlier in the year. He expressed frustration over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Trump, in a post on his social platform, questioned how Brown was allowed on the streets and called for stricter measures against criminals. “Such criminals need to be trapped. You can literally see the blood of this innocent woman on the killer’s knife,” he stated.
“North Carolina and all states need law and order, and only Republicans will deliver that!” he added, supporting a former Republican National Committee Chairman in the upcoming Senate race.
The situation continues to unfold as both opinions and emotions run high in response to this devastating event.
