New York Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Responds to Criticism
New York City candidate Zohran Mamdani spoke out against his critics on Sunday, addressing what he termed their “mythical” version of him and bringing up old tweets that have resurfaced.
After winning the Democratic primary, Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist, has gained attention at the national level. He’s encountering resistance from both Republican and Democratic factions due to past statements and policy suggestions that some deem too radical.
In an interview with CBS New York’s Marcia Kramer, Mamdani was questioned about his proposed Public Safety Plan, which suggests deploying mental health professionals instead of NYPD officers when someone is experiencing emotional distress. Critics contend that this plan might lead to employing “people who have a clipboard.”
Kramer asked, “They say it’s not appropriate, that the person could be at risk. What’s your answer to that?”
Mamdani stated, “My enemies, primarily Andrew Cuomo, would rather talk about a mythical version of myself than acknowledge my current reality. They focus on tweets from 2020 instead of my positions in 2025 because they know our ideas resonate with the people.” He continued, emphasizing that the proposals aim to meet the genuine needs of New Yorkers, moving away from past policies that have failed.
When Kramer pressed him about whether he has changed his views since those 2020 tweets, Mamdani acknowledged his evolution, explaining that those past statements were not reflective of the campaign he is running now.
In 2020, Mamdani had called for “refunding police” and was labeled a significant threat by the NYPD due to some of his comments. These statements gained renewed attention following a tragic mass shooting in midtown Manhattan that claimed four lives, including that of NYPD officers.
Additionally, Mamdani has faced backlash over his calls for removing the statue of Christopher Columbus, amplifying the concerns from various quarters regarding his stance on law enforcement and historical figures.
