Ranking the NBA’s Best Dunkers

Slam dunks may feel more artistic than analytical, but the NBA has made strides to quantify these thrilling moments over the years. In fact, the league introduced a dunk contest during the All-Star Weekend in 1984, leading to many unforgettable highlights. Last season, they rolled out a new Dunks Score Metric, which was used to highlight the year’s top dunks.

While fancy algorithms can help with analysis, the essence of a great dunk is something that resonates on a primal level. For instance, I witnessed John Collins’ dunk that was ranked No. 3 in the league last season, but honestly, I wouldn’t put it at the top of my list. That honor goes to Andrew Wiggins from the 2022 Western Conference Finals.

Last week, we covered the best shooting performances in the league, and now it’s time to dive into the best dunkers. As always, there will be some honorable mentions along with the main list.

9. Jaylen Brown, F, Boston Celtics

I still remember Jaylen Brown’s impressive hammer dunk during the 2015 McDonald’s High School Game. Last year, the Celtics star had 43 dunks, showcasing some jaw-dropping moments. Notably, he caught Jalen Smith in NBA Cup play early on and had a memorable slam over Miles Turner. Brown’s dunk repertoire is remarkable, and I have to admit, his poster on Maxi Kleber is one of my favorites. As he approaches 29 this October, he continues to be a standout in the game.

8. John Collins, F, Los Angeles Clippers

Collins is gearing up for another competitive season with the Clippers this year as they aim for relevance. Standing at 6’9″ and weighing 235 pounds, he’s known for being both a rim attacker and a remarkable performer. Last season, he pulled off 66 dunks in 40 games with the Jazz, and now with talents like James Harden joining the Clippers, he’ll likely have plenty of chances for highlights. His dunk contest performances have always entertained, particularly one where he hilariously broke a prop plane while channeling the Tuskegee Airmen.

7. Amen Thompson, G, Houston Rockets

Leading up to the 2023 NBA Draft, I took note of Amen Thompson’s incredible physical gifts that made him a top-five pick. Under the coaching of Ime Udoka, he has become a versatile player—think of him as a free safety on the court. While his outside shooting can be shaky, he makes up for it with explosive plays. Last season, he logged 138 dunks across 69 games, developing his style by New Year’s. With Kevin Durant by his side, I expect Thompson to create some electric moments this year.

6. Derrick Jones Jr., F, Los Angeles Clippers

Derrick Jones Jr. has long been recognized among the league’s elite dunkers, having won two dunk contests. He played a significant role last season with the Clippers, and even with an increased focus on defense, he still managed to rack up a notable number of dunks. His ability to deliver highlight-reel plays remains, and I can’t help but reminisce about some of his incredible dunks from last season.

5. Giannis Antetokounmpo, F, Milwaukee Bucks

Giannis brings a unique combination of speed and strength that makes dunking look effortless. Although James Harden has commented about the simplicity of his style, Giannis’ effectiveness can’t be overstated. He executed 243 dunks in just 67 games last season, marking a significant percentage of his overall scoring. His agility and ability to maneuver in tight spaces add another layer to his game, making him one of the toughest players to defend against.

4. Jalen Johnson, F, Atlanta Hawks

Jalen Johnson’s potential has become a focal point of excitement for the Hawks. Restricted to just 36 games last year due to injury, his return is awaited, especially with new teammates like Kristaps Porzingis joining the roster. Before his injury, he was performing like an All-Star, displaying exceptional synergy with Trae Young. The anticipation around him could mark him as a player to watch this season.

3. Ja Morant, G, Memphis Grizzlies

Morant’s position on this list is tricky, given his limited dunks last season. Yet, he remains the type of player who can surprise fans at any moment with a breathtaking dunk, even when the odds are against him. His agility and skill mean that he could very well rise above this year’s competition, but we’ll have to see how he adjusts as the season progresses.

2. Anthony Edwards, G, Minnesota Timberwolves

Anthony Edwards has already cemented his spot among the league’s most iconic dunkers. Entering the 2024 season, his highlight reel is plentiful, from posterizing opponents to acrobatic lobs. He showcases a level of athleticism that evokes memories of young legends like Kobe and MJ. As the Timberwolves aim for a strong campaign, I anticipate even more incredible dunks from him.

1. Shaedon Sharpe, G, Portland Trail Blazers

Shaedon Sharpe’s rise to a top-10 draft pick is impressive, especially considering his background. Known for his astounding leaping ability, he’s made waves with in-game dunks that break records. Although still developing as a player, Sharpe’s flair and creativity in the air firmly establish him as a top-tier dunker in the league.

Other notable dunkers include Jalen Duren (C, Detroit Pistons), Ausar Thompson (G, Detroit Pistons), Yves Missi (C, New Orleans Pelicans), Jonathan Kuminga (F, Golden State Warriors), Bilal Coulibaly (F, Washington Wizards), Aaron Gordon (F, Denver Nuggets), Jalen Green (G, Phoenix Suns), and Donovan Mitchell (G, Cleveland Cavaliers).
