Howard Stern Remains at SiriusXM Amid Contract Talks
Radio personality Howard Stern is still with SiriusXM as he negotiates a new contract, despite speculation about his potential departure. Reports surfaced in August suggesting that Stern’s long-standing partnership with SiriusXM could be ending after two decades.
According to an insider, “Stern’s contract is coming up soon, and they’re not going to let him go without making an offer.” On Monday, Stern confirmed that discussions with SiriusXM are ongoing.
“SiriusXM and my team have been discussing how we can move forward together. They’ve been great about it,” Stern stated. “We’re in talks.” He also expressed contentment with SiriusXM and downplayed fears about leaving, even after the company brought in podcaster Alex Cooper.
When asked about Cooper, Stern remarked, “I don’t know much about her. If she’s young and positive, that’s great—I’m all for it.” He did express frustration over the rumors, mentioning they’ve placed him in a tricky situation.
“What’s really frustrating is that I can’t just walk away right now,” he said, adding that retirement thoughts are on his mind but not feasible at the moment. According to Hollywood Reporter, SiriusXM is currently tightening its budget, aiming to save $200 million by 2025, which includes some layoffs.
The company has also been managing subscriber numbers, which dipped from 34 million in 2020 to about 33 million. However, SiriusXM executives have expressed a desire to keep Stern on air, noting that current negotiations are significant.
In previous discussions, Stern has been vocal about his disdain for former President Trump and his supporters, making comments about the implications of political preferences. “This idea of judging people based on who they like—I’ve been in that situation myself,” he said. “I really don’t align with Trump’s views and have no respect for those who support him. I think they’re misguided.” He even compared Trump’s rhetoric on immigration to historical figures like Hitler.
Stern reflected on the seriousness of political discourse, stating, “It’s similar to what we’ve seen in history. Hitler was viewed as a joke, yet somehow he managed to come to power, and that was disastrous for Germany.” He also described Trump’s supporters in less than flattering terms, saying, “I can only hope that intelligent and loving people continue to cherish this country.” He emphasized that many of them have never experienced life under authoritarian rule and may not grasp the full impact of their political choices.
