Cracker Barrel Freezes Restaurant Remodel Plans
Cracker Barrel announced on Tuesday that it will pause any changes to its restaurant designs, maintaining its cherished “old country store” atmosphere.
In a message titled “Your old country store stays here,” the chain reassured patrons that if their location hasn’t undergone any renovations yet, “there’s no reason to be concerned, it won’t be changing.”
The restaurant acknowledged feedback, stating, “We’ve clearly heard that modern remodeled designs don’t reflect what you love about Cracker Barrel.”
After testing new designs in just four out of its 660 locations, the company decided not to move forward. It vowed to ensure that all its establishments are well-maintained and meet customer expectations.
Cracker Barrel emphasized its commitment to “Vintage Americana,” highlighting elements like cozy rocking chairs, fireplaces, and unique gifts sourced from Lebanon, Tennessee. The goal is to provide a warm, welcoming space where friends and family can enjoy their favorite dishes and the well-known hospitality.
Furthermore, Cracker Barrel’s decision to revert from the “old timer” logo is part of a broader effort to better respond to customer preferences.
The chain had previously launched a $60-700 million redesign initiative aimed at modernizing all locations with brighter interiors, minimalist furniture, and a new text-only logo that removed the iconic “Uncle Herschel” character. While there were some elements retained, like fireplaces and rocking chairs, the changes stripped away much of the traditional décor and darker wood tones.
Customers quickly voiced their displeasure, finding the new aesthetic “soulless” and “barren.” Conservative critics claimed the brand was departing from core American values. Following a viral backlash and a notable dip in stock prices, Cracker Barrel reinstated the old logo but initially continued with planned interior updates.
In just a few days, the chain responded, reaffirming much of its visual heritage, declaring, “that never changes… the values upon which this company has been built” — diligence, family, scratch-cooked meals, and country hospitality.
