Norwegian Social Democrats Secure Election Victory, Yet Populists Make Largest Gains

Norwegian Labour Party Secures Narrow Victory

On Monday, the Norwegian Labour Party managed to maintain its power, albeit by a slim margin, underscoring the rising influence of populist right-wing parties.

Labour, allied with 87 center-left representatives, succeeded in securing a second term. However, the right-wing bloc, which lost power in 2021, gained over 12 seats. They had previously been ousted after eight years with a majority of 68 seats. Prime Minister Jonas Gar Støre will continue in his role after his inaugural win in 2021. The Labour Party remains the largest faction on the left, while on the opposing side, the Populist and Progressive Party, also known as Fremskrittspartiet, continues to gain traction.

Despite the increasing strength of right-wing forces across Europe, Støre remarked that it’s still possible for Social Democrats to secure electoral victories.

Johannes Berg, a national election analyst at the Norwegian Institute of Social Research, noted that key issues like living costs, taxes, and healthcare remain at the forefront in this election cycle. He pointed out a notable shift in favor of rightist views, particularly among younger voters, but suggested that Labour still benefits from favorable views regarding key international trade relationships.

With 99% of votes counted, reports indicated a 1.9% increase in Labour’s support, whereas the Progressive Party saw a significant surge of 12.3%, reaching 22.9%—its strongest showing yet, making it the primary opposition to Labour.

In contrast, the Centre Party saw a decline of 7.9% nationally, while the Conservative Party, which is the second largest on the right, lost 5.7% of its support, indicative of shifting voter loyalties. Both Sylvi Listhaug, leader of the Progressive Party, and Erna Solberg, the Conservative leader, reached out to Støre before the night concluded to congratulate him and acknowledge the outcome.
