Shift in American Views on Capitalism
A recent Gallup poll indicated that Americans’ support for capitalism has plummeted to its lowest level since the company began measuring attitudes toward economic systems in 2010. The poll found that only 54% of Americans viewed capitalism positively in 2025, a decline from 60% in 2021. On the other hand, support for socialism holds steady at 39%.
Even though support for capitalism has waned, it still garners more positive recognition compared to socialism, which sees about 57% of Americans expressing negative sentiments toward it.
Declining Faith in Economic Systems
Both Democratic and independent voters have experienced an 8 percentage point drop in favorable views of capitalism since 2021. For the first time, less than half of Democrats (42%) hold a favorable opinion of capitalism, while a slight majority of independents (51%) still do. It’s interesting to see how these views fluctuate, isn’t it?
In contrast, Republicans’ opinions on capitalism have remained fairly stable, with around 75% still holding positive views. Since 2010, Democrats’ favorability toward socialism has jumped from about 50% to roughly two-thirds, whereas Republican and independent perspectives have remained relatively static.
Economic Pessimism and Corporate Views
Gallup observed that “Democrats are the only partisan group where a majority view socialism more favorably than capitalism, with rates of 66% for socialism compared to 42% for capitalism.” Meanwhile, independents lean slightly more towards capitalism (51%) than socialism (38%), and Republicans overwhelmingly support capitalism (74% vs. 14%).
As support for capitalism dwindles, American perceptions of large corporations have soured as well. Currently, only 37% view them positively, while 62% hold negative views. It’s striking how quickly opinions can shift. This marks a significant decline, with a 9-point drop this year alone and a 6-point decrease in 2021. American positive perceptions peaked at 58% in 2012 but have declined almost every year since, except for a brief uptick in 2019.
Interestingly, while skepticism towards socialism persists, there has been a noticeable uptick in Democrats viewing socialism positively compared to capitalism since 2016. This trend has been attributed to an increase in support for democratic socialism among Democratic constituents.
“This more favorable view among Democrats is likely influenced by well-known figures like Sens. Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who champion policies aiming to amplify government involvement in society,” Gallup noted.
