Israel's Strike on Hamas in Qatar is 'Regrettable' yet 'Justifiable'

Israeli Airstrikes Raise Concerns

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt described Israeli airstrikes targeting Hamas in Doha, Qatar, as “unfortunate,” although she acknowledged that eliminating terrorists is an important objective.

The airstrikes came as a response to a terrorist incident in Jerusalem, which had resulted in the deaths of six Israeli civilians. Hamas took responsibility for that attack.

Earlier today, US troops informed the Trump administration of Israel’s actions. Unfortunately, some of Hamas’s operations were located in Doha, which is a key ally of both Qatar and the US. This military action poses a risk to ongoing efforts for peace in the region.

Nonetheless, the White House emphasized the importance of dismantling Hamas, which has exploited the suffering of people in Gaza. Following the attack, President Trump directed Special Envoy Vitkov to communicate with Katalis regarding the developments.

Trump views Qatar as a significant ally and expressed regret over the airstrike’s location. He hopes for a quick resolution, including the safe return of hostages and the end of the conflict.

Additionally, Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu after the incident. Netanyahu expressed a desire to accelerate peace negotiations, and Trump suggested this incident could be turned into an opportunity for reconciliation.

The President also communicated with Qatari leaders, extending gratitude for their support and friendship, while reassuring them such incidents would not recur on Qatari soil.

Leavitt did not specify whether Trump was displeased with Netanyahu or if there would be repercussions for Israel’s actions.

She clarified that the airstrikes in Doha were not what Trump had in mind when he warned Hamas about the ceasefire proposal that Israel had accepted, which he labeled as their last chance.

In 2022, President Joe Biden designated Qatar as a “Major Non-NATO Ally,” acknowledging its strategic importance, especially since the US maintains significant air force bases there.
