It’s not surprising that there’s concern about a population crisis — young men and women are significantly mismatched.

It's not surprising that there's concern about a population crisis — young men and women are significantly mismatched.

Generational divides are evident in the current political landscape, especially regarding issues like family and marriage, which weren’t always contentious for parents and grandparents.

A recent poll indicates that young men who support Donald Trump place a high value on having children, whereas it’s not seen as a priority for young women who favor Kamala Harris.

What used to be common life milestones now seems to fuel political debate.

This shift is likely influenced by right-wing figures advocating for traditional family values.

Polls conducted in August and September revealed that Americans between 18 and 29 were asked to select their top three life priorities, where fulfilling careers, emotional well-being, and financial stability topped the list. Marriage ranked fourth for male Trump supporters, while women supporting Harris ranked economic independence as their primary concern, with having children and marriage ranking lower.

For men supporting Harris, marriage fell to 10th place, while women ranked it even lower at 12th. It’s no wonder there’s growing concern about a potential baby bust.

Voices such as Ben Shapiro and other conservative influencers encourage young men to prioritize marriage and family. They’ve even made statements about public figures like Taylor Swift, suggesting she should embrace traditional values.

The discourse among my generation is tangled and often contradictory regarding love and marriage, shaped by various internet influencers.

Figures like Jordan Peterson attract millions of views with lectures on marriage, while personalities like Elon Musk promote having large families.

Yet, there are also influential celebrities who share contrary views, such as model Emily Ratajkowski, who has adopted an unconventional approach to marriage.

Chappell Roan, a pop music icon, points out that young women may feel that a partner or children are less important compared to other aspirations. It’s disheartening, honestly—these are life choices, not mere political stances.

We’re in a unique era where many barriers have been broken, yet the narratives surrounding relationships have become increasingly complex.

Ultimately, both young men and women, irrespective of their political affiliations, would benefit from messages that encourage the pursuit of family and career simultaneously. It’s crucial to highlight that you can value marriage and family without sacrificing personal independence.

There’s a slight silver lining in the polling data: a shared sentiment across political views that fame is not the ultimate goal.
