Cuomo’s Mayoral Campaign Strategy Unfolds
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo has selected experienced Democratic strategist Greg Goldner to spearhead his campaign for the New York City mayoral race, a move indicative of the challenges he anticipates as Election Day approaches.
A recent poll conducted by the New York Times and Siena College, between September 2 and 6, suggests Cuomo has managed to lead his opponent Zohran Mamdani by more than 20 points. The poll results were made public on Tuesday morning.
Goldner, hailing from Chicago, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having worked on campaigns for notable figures like Rahm Emanuel, John Kelly, Vice President Al Gore, and former President Barack Obama.
“Greg is not just experienced; he is astutely strategic,” remarked Emanuel, who has held various significant roles, including serving as Chief of Staff under Obama and acting as ambassador to Japan. Emanuel noted that Goldner’s proven leadership will benefit Cuomo and his team significantly.
Facing Challenges, Mamdani Remains Steadfast
Polls indicate that Mamdani, who had previously bested Cuomo during the Democratic primary, currently leads the pack of mayoral contenders with 46% compared to Cuomo’s 24%.
Trump Comments on Cuomo’s Prospects in the Election
The tight race is underscored by a hypothetical matchup between the candidates, where Mamdani garners 48% of the vote against Cuomo’s 44% if both Republican candidate Sriwa and current mayor Eric Adams were not in the race. Both Sriwa and Adams have committed to remaining in the competition until November. Reports have indicated that President Donald Trump’s advisors are considering their options should either decide to step back.
As they prepare for the upcoming election in November, both Cuomo and Adams are positioning themselves as independent candidates, each presenting alternatives to Mamdani’s socialist agenda.
Cuomo stated, “From significant infrastructure initiatives to transformative legislation, I believe in serving the people effectively. As a Democrat, prioritizing the public’s needs is essential, and I am thrilled to have Greg on my team in pursuit of becoming the next mayor of New York City.”
In a recent meeting with New York City business leaders to garner support, veteran pollster Cornell Belcher also joined Cuomo’s campaign. Belcher is recognized for his long-standing role in Democratic polling and strategy, having contributed to Obama’s winning campaign.
The Cuomo campaign has confirmed that they continue to actively engage in field operations since launching their general election campaign in July.
