Ukrainian Woman’s Family Plans Burial in the US Following Fatal Stabbing
Iryna Zarutska’s family has informed the Ukrainian embassy that she will be laid to rest in the United States, citing her love for the country, according to federal prosecutors.
On Tuesday, federal prosecutors charged DeCarlos Brown with causing death through violent acts in a mass transit system, relating to the fatal stabbing of Zarutska on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 22.
Special Agent James Barnacle from the FBI noted that after Zarutska’s death, the embassy reached out, offering assistance to bring her body home. However, her family decided to hold her funeral in the U.S. Barnacle highlighted the need for justice, stating they are there to fix what has gone wrong.
Surveillance footage from the light rail reveals that Zarutska was in front of Brown, wearing her work uniform, when he attacked her, stabbing her three times, including at least once in the neck.
Zarutska moved to the U.S. with her family in August 2022, seeking refuge from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She quickly adapted to life in her new home, bringing her mother and two siblings with her. Her obituary describes her as kind and creative, leaving a positive impact on everyone she encountered.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department responded to an emergency call and found Zarutska on the train, discovering the murder weapon—a pocket knife—along with other items.
Ferguson stated that this violent act against an innocent woman trying to go about her day is an assault on the very fabric of American life. He emphasized the broader implications of such crimes, not only affecting the victim but also undermining public trust in mass transit systems.
Attorney General Pam Bondy attributed Zarutska’s death to lenient criminal policies that endanger innocent lives, while FBI Director Kash Patel condemned the incident as a disgraceful act not characteristic of America.
Brown faces a potential life sentence or even a death penalty, the DOJ informed.
