Millions of Social Security beneficiaries in the United States are set to receive their benefits soon.
Today is Wednesday, September 10th, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be distributing the next batch of payments based on their distribution schedule.
Who is receiving payments today, September 10th?
Payments today are designated for specific beneficiaries, including those receiving resignation, disability (SSDI), or survivor benefits.
Out of nearly 70 million retired individuals and those on SSDI or survivor benefits, most will receive their payments on one of three Wednesdays each month, starting with today.
The designated Wednesday for each recipient is based on the worker’s date of birth that aligns with their eligibility for Social Security benefits.
For example, if your benefits are based on your work history, your own date of birth is considered. If they come from a spouse or parent’s work record, then the relevant spouse or parent’s date of birth is used.
Today, September 10th, the SSA will distribute payments to individuals whose date of birth, or their related family’s date of birth, falls between the 1st and 10th of the month.

Who won’t receive payments on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays?
- Specific long-term beneficiaries
If you began claiming retirement, SSDI, or survivor benefits before May 1997, your payments will typically be issued on the third of each month, irrespective of your date of birth.
These long-term beneficiaries are due for payment today.
Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI)—which is aimed at low-income individuals over 65 or with disabilities—usually receive payments on the first of each month.
However, since September started off with a federal holiday, this month’s SSI payment date was adjusted to the nearest workday, which fell on Friday, August 29th.
- Double Beneficiaries (SSI + regular Social Security)
Approximately 2.5 million people in the U.S. receive both SSI and Social Security retirement, SSDI, or survivor benefits.
Typically, they expect the SSI payment on the first day of the month and the Social Security payment on the third. Nonetheless, because September 1st was a holiday, they received their SSI payment on August 29th.
Recipients outside the second, third and fourth Wednesdays – September 2025
- SSI Beneficiaries: Friday, August 29th
- Social Security before May 1997 Receivers: Wednesday, September 3rd
- Double Beneficiary: SSI was paid on August 29th, Social Security payment will be made on September 3rd
