Military discipline aids former Navy member in crafting appealing pinot noir

From Navy to Vineyard: Adam Lazare’s Unique Journey

Adam Lazare never thought his time in the US Navy would take him into the world of winemaking. Yet, as a former electronics engineer, he feels that the discipline and problem-solving abilities honed during his service significantly contributed to his success in crafting wine.

“The military experience was crucial; it taught me how to break down issues,” Lazare shared in a recent interview at his winery in Paso Robles, California. He emphasized that being able to dissect a problem was vital—not just in maintaining composure under pressure but in effectively addressing complex challenges.

During his time stationed on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean, Lazare started to cultivate a taste for wine. While alcohol was prohibited, he found clever ways to taste Guinness and wine smuggled in from Singapore. “I really developed my palate and gained a foundational knowledge of wine back then,” he added.

After leaving the Navy, Lazare pursued a degree in painting and winemaking. It was there that he fell in love with Pinot Noir. “It’s an alluring grape, vibrant and beautiful,” he remarked, reflecting on his choice of varietal.

In 2003, he launched his own wine label, marking a significant milestone, though he still produced larger commercial wines alongside it. Today, his Pinot Noir and Cabernet are highlighted through various channels.

Lazare believes in giving back, and he actively supports organizations that assist veterans. “I think it’s great to honor those who serve, both men and women,” he stated with genuine appreciation. “Being a part of that cause makes me very happy.”
