Controversy Surrounds “Golden Bachelor” Star Mel Owens
Mel Owens, the new lead on ABC’s “The Golden Bachelor,” had high hopes for his role. However, his excitement dimmed after he revealed plans to eliminate contestants over the age of 60, which stirred quite a reaction.
During an appearance on the “To the Trench” podcast, Owens shared that he initially requested an age range of contestants between 45 and 60. He mentioned being surprised when the show’s executive producer pointed out that “this isn’t ‘silver singles.’” They reassured him that the contestants would still be attractive.
Owens Sets Age Limits Despite Pushback
In a candid interview, Owens reflected on the challenges of dating, saying he felt he hadn’t dated in ages after being married for 25 years. He expressed remorse, noting that his comments were perhaps unfair, and took the time to apologize to women involved in the show.
Owens also remarked that he requested to avoid “artificial waist and wig” elements in the show, emphasizing his interest in finding genuine connections.
When questioned about his age comment, Owens admitted he lacked understanding about the show’s guidelines, saying he hadn’t followed the series closely since its debut. His views on dating were notably based on his past experiences rather than the show’s legacy.
“You don’t have the age to love, or to hold back your spirit,” he stated, promising that viewers would be surprised by the richness of relationships showcased in the show.
Despite the backlash, he maintained that the talent and beauty of all the women involved would outweigh any initial controversy he created. He reflected that those involved were wonderful individuals, and he anticipated a positive reception from audiences.
Jerry Turner, a previous “Golden Bachelor” star, expressed concern over Owens’s remarks, suggesting that if Owens pursued his controversial plan, he might be “cheating himself” out of meaningful connections. Turner urged that age should be overlooked in the quest for genuine love.
Owens ultimately acknowledged he wasn’t sure if he’d find love during the season, but he gained insight into what love means, emphasizing compatibility and shared experiences.
The show is set to premiere on ABC on September 24th, promising a mix of drama, connection, and a deeper look into relationships at any age.
