Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy Starts Inquiry into North Carolina Train Security Following Stabbing Incident

Federal Investigation into Charlotte Regional Transportation Following Tragic Murder

On Wednesday, Sean Duffy from the Department of Transportation announced that the Federal Transportation Agency (FTA) will be investigating the Charlotte Regional Transportation System (CATS). This comes after the tragic murder of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska on August 22.

The FTA’s press release indicated that the investigation will look into security expenditures and safety measures, as well as ongoing risks facing both operators and passengers. They are requiring CATS to present plans aimed at reducing crime and fare evasion, as well as ensuring adequate funding for enhancing the safety of passengers and workers.

Duffy expressed his views, saying, “Despite attempts by the media and Charlotte’s Mayor to downplay this tragedy, many have seen the harrowing circumstances surrounding Iryna Zarutska’s last moments.” He holds local leaders accountable for policies he believes contributed to this preventable incident.

“The local leader’s lenient policies need to reconsider their approach, as they are directly linked to Iryna’s tragic death and put commuters at risk,” he added. Moreover, he emphasized that the current administration is committed to a coordinated effort to hold politicians accountable for enabling violence that endangers public transportation.

“At USDOT, we will investigate CATS and similar systems to ensure they are taking necessary precautions for the safety of all,” Duffy stated.

The investigation is triggered by the shocking death of Iryna Zartoska, who was fatally attacked at the East/West Boulevard station of the Links Blue Line Light Rail System. DeCarlos Brown Jr. has been arrested as a suspect and faces murder charges. He has a prior criminal history, and the U.S. Department of Justice is pursuing severe penalties, termed “unforgivable” by Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Bondi reflected on the case, stating, “Iryna Zarutska was a young woman with dreams, and her tragic murder is a consequence of ineffective crime policies that prioritize criminals over innocent individuals.” She noted her efforts in pursuing federal charges against Brown, emphasizing his history of violence.

FBI Director Kash Patel commended Bondi for initiating federal charges to obtain accountability for the perpetrator.
