Harris calls Biden's choice to seek reelection 'careless' in her latest memoir

Kamala Harris Critiques Biden’s Re-Election Bid in New Memoir

Former Vice President Kamala Harris, in her memoir titled *107 Days*, describes Joe Biden’s decision to run for re-election in 2024 as “reckless.” This assessment comes after she shared her thoughts on the reactions from other Democratic leaders when Biden announced his bid.

“It was Joe and Jill’s decision. We all said, like a mantra, as if we were all hypnotized,” she reflected in the memoir.

Harris suggests that Biden’s choice stemmed from “ego,” framing it as a personal rather than a collective party decision. She also elaborated on why she felt it inappropriate to urge Biden to step back from the race.

“The stakes were simply too high,” Harris wrote. “This was not a choice that should have been left to the individual’s ego, the individual’s ambitions. It should have been more than a personal decision.”

“And of all the people in the White House, I was in the worst position to insist he should be dropped,” she admitted. “If I advised him not to run, he would interpret it as incredibly selfish, viewing it as naked ambition.”

“When the polls showed I was more popular, people around him didn’t like the contrast that was emerging,” she added. “If I did well, he didn’t grasp what he did well.”

Harris also addressed ongoing discussions about the apparent efforts to obscure Biden’s mental decline, as noted in works by various authors. She wrote, “Many people want to hide Joe Biden’s frailty by telling the story of a big White House plot, and here’s the truth I lived in. On his worst day, he was deeper and more knowledgeable… But at 81, Joe was tired.”

“I don’t think it’s surprising that the debate fiasco happened shortly after two consecutive trips to Europe and a flight to Hollywood for fundraisers,” she remarked, alluding to Biden’s struggling performance in a debate that ultimately led to his decision to leave the race.

Harris criticized the Biden administration’s staff for marginalizing her role, stating, “I had to constantly defend my position at events,” indicating her frustration with how her contributions were perceived.

After Biden exited the race, Harris faced challenging circumstances as Democratic leaders positioned her but ultimately lost to President Trump, who garnered 312 electoral votes.
