Political Leaders Respond to Shooting Incident Involving Charlie Kirk

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle reacted swiftly after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot while speaking at the “American Comeback Tour” event held at Utah Valley University on Wednesday afternoon.

Bipartisan calls for prayer and condemnation of political violence came almost immediately after news of the incident surfaced. “This is a good time to pray,” tweeted Sen. Mike Lee of Utah. He mentioned he was keeping an eye on the developments.

House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana expressed support with a tweet saying, “Pray for our best friend, Charlie Kirk.”

Democratic Representative Eugene Vindman from Virginia also took to social media, asserting that “Political violence does not exist in our society,” while emphasizing the need to follow the situation in Utah closely.

“Today’s attack on Charlie Kirk is a horrifying act of political violence. We pray for his safety and his family. We must reject and condemn political violence in all its forms,” he commented.

House Minority Leader Hakem Jeffries from New York also added his voice against the violence, stating, “Political violence is never acceptable. My thoughts and prayers go out to Charlie Kirk and his family.”

Key Senate leaders shared similar sentiments just minutes after the shooting. Senate Majority Leader John Thune remarked, “We don’t have a country for political violence. Full stop. Pray for Charlie Kirk,” through a post on social media.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed dismay over the incident as well, stating that “Political violence has no place in America. The shooting is horrifying, and I pray for Charlie Kirk and his family.”

Kirk previously faced a life-threatening situation back in 2011 when there was an assassination attempt against him. “It’s unsettling to learn that Charlie Kirk was shot during this event in Utah. While political disagreement is a part of democratic discourse, resorting to violence is never acceptable,” commented Rep. Gifford. She mentioned that she and her husband, Sen. Mark Kelly, are hoping for Kirk’s recovery.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi also condemned the gun violence following the event. She stated, “Today’s horrifying shootings at Utah Valley University are being condemned. Political violence has no place in our country. All Americans must pray for Charlie Kirk’s recovery and keep the entire UVU community in mind as they endure the trauma of this gun violence.”

Ellen Trenner, who is the vice president of strategic communications at Utah Valley University, confirmed to Fox News that the suspect has been taken into custody following the shooting.

White House officials indicated that the situation was being closely monitored, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio observing the developments in his capacity as national security adviser.
