Silicon Valley CEO starts project for murals of Iryna Zarutska in US cities

Silicon Valley Takes Action After Ukrainian Refugee’s Death

Silicon Valley is stepping in following the tragic case of Ukrainian refugee Irina Zartoska, whose death left many in shock. Eoghan McCabe, the CEO and founder of Intercom, has pledged $500,000 to create murals of Zartoska’s face in key cities across the United States. He specifically mentioned offering $50,000, along with a $10,000 grant, for a mural in a notable location.

People interested in getting involved or contributing to this initiative are encouraged to reach out to McCabe’s Chief of Staff, Katie Brenske Torsted. McCabe’s announcement caught the eye of tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has also expressed his thoughts on the media’s portrayal of Zartoska’s situation and the surrounding community response.

The Family of Iryna Zarutska Calls for Justice

In their first statement following the “terrifying” events that led to Zartoska’s death, her family is demanding justice. Individuals connected with the mural campaign, who chose to remain anonymous, mentioned they are currently collaborating with over 1,000 artists nationwide. They seek appropriate locations for the murals as well as initiating a poster campaign in major cities.

Reportedly, McCabe’s motivation stems from a desire to make sure Zartoska is remembered amidst the brutality of her death and media coverage. Some discussions also hint at a critique of failed policies that… well, perhaps left communities vulnerable.

After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, murals honoring him appeared across cities, igniting a broader conversation about social justice. The disturbing surveillance footage of Zartoska’s death has sparked debates about crime and public safety. The suspect, identified as DeCarlos Brown Jr., was previously apprehended for allegedly murdering Zartoska while she was on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Former President Donald Trump condemned the incident harshly, labeling the murder as “terrifying” while questioning why Brown, whom he described as a “mentally confused madman,” had been free despite a history of criminal offenses.

Federal Charges Filed in the Case

Trump shared his distress about being on a metro in Charlotte, North Carolina, just after witnessing the brutal video of Zartoska, who had fled the war in Ukraine. Zartoska had arrived in the U.S. in August 2022 and was employed at Zepedi’s pizzeria when her life was cut short.

“This could have easily been anyone on the train that night,” her family stated in their initial response to the tragedy, echoing a commitment to preventing such occurrences in the future.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that Zartoska was seated on the Lynx Blue Line train when she was approached by Brown, who later attacked her. Following this incident, Brown was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, with additional federal charges related to violent behavior in a transit system announced by the Justice Department.
