The injury situation surrounding Brock Purdy has prompted the 49ers to consider acquiring another quarterback.
Currently, though, they find themselves with only two healthy options at the position.
With Purdy facing shoulder and toe injuries, he is seen as a “long shot” to play against the Saints this Sunday. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned on Wednesday that he is interested in bolstering the quarterback lineup.
“I love that we have three guys ready to step in,” Shanahan shared with the media. “But there are some roster complications that make it tricky to bring someone in immediately.”
On Wednesday, the 49ers had discussions with former Jets and Dolphins quarterback Mike White, as reported by NFL.com.
At the moment, the Patriots have Mac Jones as their starting quarterback, while Adrian Martinez was added to the practice squad in late August, following the Jets’ departure from providing backup support.
Rookie Cartis Rourke, a seventh-round pick, remains on the non-football injury list as he recovers from a torn ACL and is anticipated to miss the entire 2025 season.
Jones, who is 27, served as a backup to Trevor Lawrence last season with the Jaguars. He played in ten games, starting seven, and wrapped up the 2024 season with 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
Jones was the 15th overall pick in 2021 and had an impressive start in New England, earning a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie with 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Yet, by his third season, he fell out of favor with coach Bill Belichick.
Martinez, now 25, is yet to take the field in an NFL game.
Purdy recently signed a lucrative five-year, $265 million contract extension with the 49ers in the previous offseason.
