President Donald Trump has announced that he will posthumously award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist who was tragically shot while speaking at an event in Utah on Wednesday. Kirk, who was 31 years old, was struck by a bullet that reportedly came from the roof of a nearby building at Utah Valley University. He was taken to a local hospital in a private vehicle but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, according to authorities.
Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, focusing on promoting low taxes and limited government on college campuses. Initially, there were some uncertainties about the organization, but it gained strong support from Trump after he won the GOP nomination in 2016. During the general election campaign, Kirk worked as a personal aide to Donald Trump Jr. and cultivated relationships with numerous Republicans, including Trump himself, who confirmed Kirk’s death on Wednesday.
“No one understood or connected with young Americans better than Charlie,” Trump said about Kirk. “He is no longer with us, nor with everyone else, especially me. Melania and I send our condolences to his wife, Erica, and his family. Charlie, we love you!”
In a statement earlier on Wednesday, Trump declared he would honor Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of freedom, and an inspiration to countless people,” the president stated before addressing the events of September 11, 2001, at the Pentagon.
What is the President’s Medal of Freedom?
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is regarded as the highest civilian honor in the United States. It can be awarded by the president to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions in various fields, including arts, public services, and science. As per an executive order from President John F. Kennedy, the award honors those who have made notable contributions to national security, world peace, or significant cultural endeavors.
Presidential Freedom Award
The award does not have a formal nomination process, giving the president considerable discretion to honor whomever they choose.
Since its inception in 1963, over 670 medals have been awarded. Notable recipients include figures like Ellsworth Bunker, a Vietnam War ambassador, and Colin Powell, who received the award twice. Other recipients span a wide range, from Pope Francis I to astronauts from the Apollo 11 mission.
Several posthumous awards have also been given to icons such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Jackie Robinson.
Trump Freedom Winner
During his first term, Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 24 individuals, many of whom were athletes like Babe Ruth, Tiger Woods, and Mariano Rivera. Both Elvis Presley and former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia received the honor posthumously in 2018.
Earlier this month, Trump announced that Rudy Giuliani would also receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom after sustaining injuries in a serious car accident. However, the timeline for honoring both Giuliani and Kirk is currently unclear.
