9/11 Anniversary Commemoration

On the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a gathering took place in Lower Manhattan, where survivors, families, first responders, and civil servants came together to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost. Fox News correspondent Eric Shawn reported live from the scene, reflecting on the significance of the day.

During the broadcast, Shawn shared his personal struggle with cancer linked to the events of 9/11. He mentioned, “I have been undergoing two different diagnoses under the World Trade Center Program,” referencing a federal initiative aimed at providing ongoing care for those affected by the attacks.

Shawn expressed disbelief at how much time has passed since that tragic day, stating, “It’s hard to believe that it’s almost a quarter of a century since radical Islamic terrorism attacked our cities.” He highlighted the persistent threat to the values and freedoms that define the nation.

According to Shawn, the tragedy’s impact has been far-reaching, stating, “2,977 people were killed here that day, but the number of people who died from 9/11-related illnesses increased from the toxic dust released.” He pointed to CDC data indicating that around 48,000 people currently report diagnoses of 9/11-related cancers, with almost 10,000 new cases in the last year.

Since the attacks, over 3,700 first responders have passed away, with approximately 2,300 succumbing to cancer. The New York City fire department has been particularly hard hit, losing 409 members to health complications related to their service.

For Shawn, the statistics resonate on a personal level. Despite his respiratory and cancer issues, he feels fortunate compared to many others who have suffered more. He noted the lasting impact of the attacks and the ongoing struggles faced by survivors and responders.

Reflecting on the collective grief and resilience, Shawn commented, “We think of all those killed that day and those who continue to suffer because of their philosophy. It’s not diminished. You will never forget.” His words emphasize a commitment to remembering and honoring those who have been affected over the years.

As the nation pauses to remember, Shawn reiterated the need for unity, stating simply, “We’re all together.” This sentiment extends beyond just the commemoration, underscoring the shared legacy of this pivotal moment in history.
