He described Kirk as a man of deep spiritual conviction, with his faith often overshadowing his political rhetoric. “I believe his message about faith is even more significant than his political message,” Engelhard said.
Engelhard noted how Kirk and his wife, Erica, had become close friends over the years. Erica had initially met Kirk while planning a move to Phoenix just before the pandemic. “I think it was a year later, during the chaos of 2020, that she reached out to connect us again,” he recounted.
At a vigil for Kirk, attendees gathered to honor his legacy, as Engelhard lamented that their community must now find healing. King’s Church, where Engelhard serves, had previously defied strict lockdowns in Manhattan, showcasing their dedication to faith even in challenging times.
The Rev. Rob McCoy, who co-chairs the TPUSA faith initiative, remarked on the tragedy, stating simply that “evil has not won.” In honoring Kirk, he reminisced about a life characterized by powerful words and ideas, noting how Kirk never resorted to violence, even when faced with threats.
“Charlie did not die; he began to truly live,” McCoy said, highlighting Kirk’s courage in the face of danger. His faith gave him strength, allowing him to confront life’s uncertainties without fear.
Kirk is survived by his wife, a three-year-old daughter, and a one-year-old son. Just months prior, he expressed a desire to be remembered for his faith’s courage.
“His faith was tangible; it showed in his actions. James talks about faith without deeds being dead, but Charlie embodied real belief,” added another close friend, David Marcus. Currently, the investigation into Kirk’s killing continues, with authorities pursuing leads.
Reflecting on his legacy, supporters argue that Kirk served as a champion for values like family, life, and faith. “These ideals are vital to his legacy, and they will continue through the generations that follow,” noted Engelhard during the conversation.
