Garrett Wilson expected Justin Fields' thrilling first game with the Jets.

Justin Fields delivered a surprisingly efficient and dynamic performance, showcasing both his arm and his legs.

Garrett Wilson, a wide receiver for the Jets, wasn’t caught off guard.

Throughout the spring and summer, while his college peers were trying to establish themselves, Wilson held firm in his belief about Fields’ potential. He, too, was gearing up to demonstrate what he could do.

After four challenging seasons in the NFL, it felt like Fields was just starting to hit his stride.

On one memorable afternoon, Wilson’s premonition came to fruition.

Fields, 26, exhibited impressive versatility, throwing for 218 yards and one touchdown while also running for 48 yards and two more scores.

Despite the Jets’ inability to secure a win against the Steelers, their defense struggled against former quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“This game rewards those who truly love it, and he loves it,” Wilson noted on Thursday. “He approaches the game with the right mindset, and that energy spreads to the team. When your quarterback is delivering like that, it inspires everyone.”

Wilson added, “We aren’t done yet. We’re excited to show the world what we’re capable of.”

Fields had a mixed summer and faced some challenges in training camp.

There were legitimate concerns about his accuracy and decision-making. But against the Steelers, those worries eased a bit as he only missed six of 22 passing attempts, including a 33-yard touchdown to Wilson.

Josh Myers, who has played alongside both players at Ohio State, remarked, “It felt like 2019 all over again. It was amazing to see that connection again.”

Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand praised Fields for his poise and ability to make smart decisions during the game. He capitalized on opportunities without forcing plays.

Fields also showed his remarkable athleticism, something the Jets had been lacking in their quarterback position.

Crucially, he has developed a strong rapport with Wilson, who caught seven passes on nine targets for 95 yards against the Steelers.

Wilson shared, “His ability to pick up the game so quickly allows us to create plays on the fly. It’s like we’re back to playing streetball, and that’s thrilling.”

Of course, it was just one game, and fields still has much to prove as the Jets’ new starting quarterback.

Going forward, the team aims to build on this foundation.

“I don’t want to make it more than it is. At the end of the day, it’s about playing good football, and that’s what J. Fields excels at,” Wilson concluded. “He’s a baller.”
