Rubio promises a firm US reaction to Bolsonaro's conviction in Brazil

Rubio defends response to drug boats in Venezuela

Ron Vitiello, a senior advisor with Customs and Border Protection, expressed support for actions taken against drug smuggling boats linked to Venezuela, despite pushback from Democrats. He emphasized that CBP views certain Ecuadorian gangs as terrorist organizations.

Recently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the conviction of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for attempting a coup to hold onto power after the 2022 election. However, Rubio avoided detailing the potential U.S. response to this situation.

Rubio asserted on social media that similar to how the Brazilian Supreme Court’s ruling resulted in Bolsonaro’s imprisonment, there remains a political vendetta against him orchestrated by rights violator Alexandre de Moraes. He vowed that the U.S. would respond to what he labeled a “witch hunt.”

In response, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry criticized Rubio’s remarks as a threat to Brazilian sovereignty, asserting that U.S. threats wouldn’t undermine the nation’s democracy.

In January 2023, Bolsonaro was sentenced to over 27 years in prison after being found guilty by Brazil’s Supreme Court of plotting a coup designed to prevent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from assuming office.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the outcome of Bolsonaro’s trial, stating he had a favorable view of him as a leader. Drawing parallels to his own legal challenges, he reflected on the situation as similar to attacks he has faced.

Furthermore, Rubio took measures by revoking visas of Brazilian judges involved in what he claimed was a politically motivated effort against Bolsonaro.

After the U.S. imposed tariffs on Brazilian goods amid the backlash regarding Bolsonaro’s conviction, political tensions have only escalated.

Brazilian authorities, including Bolsonaro’s son, predict that further U.S. sanctions on their judicial system may follow due to reactions to the conviction.

The son warned that the judges involved might also become targets of sanctions under the Magnitsky Act, echoing comments made previously about potential repercussions faced by the judicial officials involved.
