Emma Heming Willis on Caring for Bruce Willis Amid FTD Diagnosis
Emma Heming Willis expresses that her husband’s care, Bruce Willis, is a decision free from controversy despite the challenges. Like many caregivers, she has faced difficult choices for her family over recent years. The most challenging was relocating Willis, 70, amid his battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a move that sparked debate online.
She recently published a book titled “Unexpected Journey: Find Strength, Hope and Self on the Path of Caregiving.” This book highlights her experiences as a caregiver for Bruce and aims to guide others who are stepping into such roles.
Heming Willis has also shared how the diagnosis has evolved over time; initially, they learned about Willis’s aphasia in 2022, which hindered his ability to speak and understand language. Later, in 2023, his family disclosed he had been diagnosed with FTD. This condition affects behavior, language, and movement, and is terminal.
“Sometimes, your loved one’s needs aren’t entirely met,” she reflects. Moving Bruce to a different living situation was daunting for her. Still, she believes that it was the right choice for everyone involved, especially their daughters, Mabel and Evelyn. “It was hard, but it was vital for the safety of our girls and for Bruce’s needs,” she explained.
Addressing stigma is part of her mission. Emma feels that the public often misjudges caregivers and their choices. In her view, no two caregiving journeys are the same, and it’s essential to support one another rather than add to feelings of guilt and shame.
As she navigates this path, she often finds herself wrestling with complex emotions. “I think it’s important to have a support system for caregivers, a space without judgment,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of reaching out for help while taking care of oneself. This struggle to balance caregiving with personal well-being is a feeling familiar to many in her situation, one where moments of sadness coexist with the commitment to live fully.
In her journey, Emma realizes that while the challenges are heavy, there can also be lightness. Her daughters, for instance, engage with their father in meaningful ways. “They do beautiful jobs supporting him,” she remarked. The importance of fostering those connections remains crucial as they navigate these uncharted waters together.
Ultimately, Emma hopes her book will act as a beacon for those feeling lost in their caregiving journeys. “You’re not alone,” she reassures others. “And it’s okay to care for yourself.”
