Derek Carr considers returning to the NFL a month after stepping away

There are plenty of job opportunities.

Retired NFL quarterback Derek Carr recently made an appearance as an analyst for a YouTube broadcast featuring the Chiefs and Chargers, but it seems his newfound media career might be sidelined if he decides to make a return to football.

“I won’t say it,” the 34-year-old Carr mentioned to Dan Patrick when asked about a possible comeback. “When I do say it, it’s because I’ve learned what usually happens. And I think we’ve all seen it. For me, training is a passion, so I’ll keep doing it. It’s going to be part of my life forever. I really enjoy training.”

Carr, who retired in May under unusual circumstances, opted against shoulder surgery that would have kept him out longer.

Interestingly, he decided to give up his fully guaranteed $30 million salary for 2025 in exchange for a $10 million roster bonus due in March, when he was supposed to be playing for New Orleans.

He shared that he sometimes enjoys throwing the football with his kids, which aids in his shoulder rehab. “I’m still doing those things,” he said. “If I’m done, if it’s God’s plan, I’m still not ready.”

Carr playfully noted that his two sons are busy coaching the Christian Warriors of Clovis, a youth football team for grades four to six.

The Saints now find themselves in a precarious situation at quarterback due to Carr’s retirement. They are currently using their fifth quarterback, Spencer Lattler, after rookie Tyler Shaw failed to secure the starting role.

In their season opener, the Saints fell 20-13, with Lattler completing 27 of 46 passes for 214 yards.

Before his injury at the end of last season, Carr had amassed 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions over ten games.

These days, the four-time Pro Bowler also runs a YouTube channel and hosts a podcast alongside his brother, former No. 1 overall pick David Carr.
