Reasons for the careful decision to withhold the suspect's name during the search for Kirk's murderer

Manhunt Following Assassination

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that a suspect in the assassination of Charlie Kirk had been apprehended. This came after a tense two-day manhunt, during which the FBI chose to withhold videos and images of the suspect.

Jason Pack, a special agent and former FBI manager, shared with Fox News Digital that this approach was deliberate. The intention was to safeguard both the investigation and public safety, drawing parallels to tactics used during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing probe.

According to Pack, keeping the suspect’s identity under wraps helps enhance public engagement by directing attention to verified images rather than unverified names. “Before naming a suspect, it’s crucial to establish biometrics and independent verification. This protects both the public and the case at hand,” Pack remarked. “This is similar to the strategy we employed in Boston, showcasing what we’re certain about and yielding quality tips without introducing unverified information.”

Investigation Protocols

Pack emphasized that investigators must wait to disclose names until all necessary notification procedures are completed, ensuring they have a positive identification that meets prosecutable standards. This method was evident during the Boston Marathon investigation, where key suspects were identified through images before DNA confirmation was processed.

He mentioned a similar experience in Nashville, where they had a suspect’s ID but needed additional confirmation through DNA testing to ensure they had the right person. “It’s essential to verify that it’s the individual in question and not a case of mistaken identity,” he added.

Authorities reported that Kirk’s assailant wore Converse sneakers. Pack noted, however, that just looking at footwear doesn’t accurately represent a suspect’s persona. “People may use non-traditional shoes for various reasons, including blending in or comfort. Investigators focus on footprints and patterns rather than just the brand,” he explained.

A reward of $100,000 has been offered for information regarding the murderer, with law enforcement reaching out to the public for assistance.

Pack highlighted that the reward amount isn’t based on a fixed formula; instead, it’s adjusted depending on the situation’s urgency and the potential threat to the community. Given the severity of the incident, officials opted for a substantial amount to encourage immediate leads.

He acknowledged the intense pressure law enforcement faced, stating, “They wanted to ensure everything was handled correctly.”
