Republicans Push for Investigation Following Assassination

A faction of House Republicans is advocating for a selection committee to delve into the “money, influence, and power behind the radical leftist attacks on America and the rule of law.” This comes in the wake of the assassination of prominent conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

This initiative, spearheaded by Representative Chip Roy (R-Texas), has garnered the support of 23 members. Roy made his request clear in a letter addressed to various committee chairs, including Mike Johnson (R-La.), James Kommer (R-Ky.), and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), prior to the arrest of the alleged assassin.

The letter argues that, amid numerous threats to American life and the erosion of lawful order, it is essential to investigate the funding behind NGOs, donors, media entities, and various organizations that may be driving these ideologies.

In the letter, the group referenced the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and its so-called “hate map” of extremist groups, particularly calling attention to how it singled out Turning Point USA earlier this year.

Members condemned the “radical organization” that has financed campaigns for district attorneys and judges known for releasing criminals back into society. They claim this has led to dire consequences, including the tragic murder of Ukrainian refugee Ilyna Zarutska by a criminal who had been released.

“Enough is enough. We need to trace the financial roots to uncover those behind the coordinated attacks directed at us and take all necessary legal measures to stop them,” the letter stated.

The call for an investigation echoes President Trump’s commitments following Kirk’s assassination, aiming to “identify everyone involved in this atrocity and other acts of political violence, including the organizations backing them.”

Both Roy and Representative Andy Biggs (R-Ariz), who also signed the letter, chair subcommittees under the House Judiciary Committee. They are requesting the establishment of a new subcommittee, equipped with full subpoena powers and authority to deliver findings.

The letter emphasizes that it’s time to acknowledge the conflict. “We can’t pretend we all share the same ideals when foreign interests and their well-funded agents are waging a war against our American values, our commitment to the Constitution, and our respect for Western civilization.”

Other supporters of this initiative include House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris (Md.) and Representatives Scott Perry (Pa.), Josh Brecheen (Okla.), Andy Ogles (Tenn.), Eric Burlison (Mo.), Keith Self (Tex.), Brandon Gill (Tex.), and Lauren Boebert (Colo.).
