"Not Beneficial For Us": Gov. Cox Encourages the Country To 'Connect With Nature' At Charlie Kirk Assassination Briefing

Utah Governor Encourages Social Media Break After Assassination

Utah Governor Spencer Cox called on Americans to take a break from social media on Friday. His remarks came in response to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA.

During a press conference, Cox quoted Kirk, who emphasized the importance of disconnecting from digital distractions to foster better interpersonal relationships. He mentioned that “Internet Furies are not real life.” Reflecting on this, Governor Cox labeled social media as “a cancer” in American society, claiming it breeds division and animosity among people with differing political views.

“It’s not healthy for us, and it’s not something we should be consuming,” Cox said. He encouraged individuals to step outside, connect with their families, and engage in community activities instead. He noted how discussions between Republicans and Democrats were still happening in his small town. “We’re gathering, aiming to find common ground,” he stated.

Moreover, Kirk believed that distancing oneself from those who hold opposing views can lead to acts of violence. Cox reiterated Kirk’s call: “Turn off your phone, read the Bible, spend time with friends, and remember that internet anger isn’t a reflection of real life.”

Authorities arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson for Kirk’s assassination. Kirk sustained a fatal gunshot wound at an event at Utah Valley University. Robinson reportedly confessed to the shooting but hesitated initially when urged by his father to surrender. After a change of heart, he was reported to the authorities by his father, who had recognized a troubling shift in his son’s political views over recent years.

Authorities revealed that Robinson shot Kirk from atop a building about 200 yards from the university campus. Evidence collected further suggested anti-fascist sentiment, with messages inscribed on shell casings. Cox urged citizens to adopt Kirk’s approach by engaging in open dialogue and free expression, describing Kirk’s belief that a lack of communication often leads to violence.
