Trump Critiques Sliwa’s Mayoral Bid
On Friday, President Trump expressed his discontent with Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa’s chances for leading New York City, making light of Sliwa’s well-known affection for cats.
“Look, I’m a Republican, but Curtis isn’t exactly prime time,” Trump said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”
He continued, “He wants the cat to be in Gracie Mansion. He doesn’t need thousands of cats.”
Trump’s comments came after a morning show host asked whether Sliwa should exit the race to prevent the Democratic frontrunner, Zoran Mamdani, from claiming victory.
Sources indicated that Trump and his allies had been making strategic efforts to simplify the mayoral race, hoping to position Mamdani against only a few significant challengers.
Trump opined that Sliwa and current mayor Eric Adams wouldn’t be successful, saying, “Frankly, it looks like Cuomo is leading the other two.” He suggested that former Governor Andrew Cuomo might be more competitive against Mamdani.
Sliwa, who has a long-standing connection with Trump, stood firm in his passion for animals. He remarked, “New Yorkers take care of people and animals, so do I.” He praised his wife, Nancy, for her dedication to animal welfare, highlighting her efforts in caring for and advocating for them.
As a mayor, Sliwa emphasized his commitment to creating a humane and livable city, focusing on animal welfare and addressing various quality-of-life issues. He even suggested that Gracie Mansion could serve as a sanctuary for cats, claiming there’s room for about 60.
In a previous conversation with New York Magazine, he stated his vision for transforming the mayor’s residence into a place that embraces both people and animals.
