A 22-year-old, identified as Tyler Robinson, has been arrested on charges of aggravated murder and related felonies across two states. This follows the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which reportedly occurred while Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University.
Robinson is currently in custody at the Utah County Jail after he was arrested on Thursday night. In addition to the murder charge, he faces accusations of felony discharge of firearms and obstruction of justice.
The recent surge of violent incidents has drawn significant attention, with President Trump advocating for severe consequences following the assassination of Kirk.
A Magistrate Judge has ordered Robinson to be held without bail, with formal charges expected to be filed early next week.
Kirk, at the age of 31, was fatally shot Wednesday. Authorities revealed that Robinson’s arrest came after an extensive investigation, which included sifting through approximately 11,000 tips over a span of 33 hours. Notably, Robinson has no previous criminal record.
The court affidavit echoes information provided by Utah Governor Spencer Cox, adding specific observations about Robinson’s behavior, including the awkward way he walked, apparently due to a gun concealed in his pants.
According to the documents, “Before the shooting, the suspect appears to walk at a relatively slow pace with his stiff right leg. The suspect’s ability to bend his right leg appears to be limited.”
Law enforcement tracked Robinson down after he hinted at his role in the shooting during a conversation with acquaintances, who subsequently alerted authorities.
Additional filings reveal dialogue with Robinson’s roommate, indicating a concern about retrieving a rifle that had been hidden in some bushes.
Governor Cox previously shared insights from Robinson’s family, who had notable concerns. They mentioned an incident where Robinson discussed his discontent with Charlie Kirk’s views during a family dinner just before September 10th, describing Kirk’s opinions as hateful and divisive.
