The FBI has reported the arrest of a man linked to the shooting of Charlie Kirk, sparking a lot of speculation about his motives.
Here’s what we know about Tyler Robinson, who is 22.
The bullet found at the scene had an engraving that seemed to reflect an anti-fascist sentiment. Some believe he may have ties to the Antifa movement.
Robinson resided in Washington, Utah, which is about 260 miles from the location where Kirk was shot. He has two younger brothers, and his mother is said to work as a social worker.
Initial findings suggested that his father worked for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, but this was later refuted by the office itself. Also, reports mentioned that Robinson had experience working in construction. A spokesperson from the sheriff’s office clarified that the suspect’s father had never been employed there.
Robinson registered to vote in 2021 but had no party affiliation and is currently listed as inactive, meaning he didn’t participate in the last election. He had developed an interest in politics in recent years.
He attended Utah State University for an engineering major but left after just one semester. Currently, he is enrolled in an Electrical Apprentice Program at Dixie Technical College in St. George.
Authorities arrived at Utah Valley University early Wednesday morning and were seen on surveillance footage both arriving and later leaving the premises.
Reports indicate that Robinson discussed a murder group on Discord under the username “Tyler.” There, he allegedly described acquiring the rifle and referenced characteristic aspects of the weapon.
The engravings on the bullet appeared to convey anti-fascist slogans, reinforcing speculation about his connection to Antifa. One message reportedly read, “If you read this, you’re a gay LMAO,” according to comments made by Utah Governor Spencer Cox.
Another bullet inscription reportedly mentioned a meme popular among certain gender identities and poked fun at other communities.
Before the incident, Robinson allegedly expressed to his family that he viewed Kirk as “full of hate.” Officials reported that Robinson didn’t cause a scene during his arrest on Thursday morning, and he was noted to be wearing clothing matching that of the shooter from surveillance footage. He indicated to his family that he would rather die than be apprehended, but they managed to persuade him to surrender.
Robinson has a minimal online presence, and it seems that some of his family’s social media content has been deleted.
He now faces serious charges, including aggravated murder, reckless discharge of a firearm resulting in serious injury, and obstruction of justice, with the potential for the death penalty if convicted.
Images circulating on social media depict Robinson dressed in a Donald Trump costume for Halloween in 2017 when he would have been around 14.
The announcement of his arrest was made on Fox News, with officials expressing confidence in their conclusion about his involvement.
This story is still developing.
